Blackjack Basics for the Novice Gambler

You might wonder how those casino card games got their household name like for instance, the classic card game of blackjack. Read on and catch the bits of it.

To start with, blackjack is a card game which main objective is to get a hand higher than the dealer's hand but not overdo it by summing up more than a total of 21. Players will be dealt initially with two cards and then is given the option to request for more. Just like how most card games are being played, cards are counted according to their value with the face cards having the equivalent of 10.

An ace card could either be counted as 1 or 11 depending to whether it would make a winning or losing hand. When a hand gets a total of more than 21, it is referred to be a "bust" or "too many." It should be kept in mind that a busted hand is an automatic loss for the player regardless even if the dealer busts too. If the dealer and a player gets the same total, it is called a "push" and neither the dealer nor the player wins or loses. In a table with more than one player, the dealer plays with each separately, thus, a dealer could lose in one or more players but still wins against the others on a same round.

Now, let us go to blackjack basic lingos. As previously mentioned before, we learned about having a bust hand and what a push is about. Next thing worthwhile knowing is what a hole card is. When cards are dealt initially, the dealer puts one of his cards face up, so the rest of the table can see it and the other one face down. The face down card is what they call the hole card. You may also see the dealer pulling the cards out from a gadget, usually plastic made but may come in different colors and shape that holds up several decks of card.

That is what you call a dealer's shoe. The main purpose of it is to minimize shuffling time when more than one deck is being used. The reason being why card games like Blackjack favors using more than one deck of cards is based on the issue of card counting strategy which is apt more so for advanced players. When a player takes another card after being dealt the first set, that is called a hit, and stand is if the player gets no more card. Double down, split and surrender are terms that pertain to bets and wagers.

So, what is a blackjack then ? A two-card hand of 21 is technically what a blackjack is. Before the game was brought to America, it was called vingt-et-un, or the French translation for 21. However, it did not become popular overnight, so gambling houses then have to offer several perks to attract people to play the table. One bonus was the 10:1 payout for a hand consisting of an ace of spades and a black Jack which could either be a spade or a club. This hand was then termed blackjack. The term stuck even long after the payout bonus was dissolved as the card game continuously gained popularity having the name, blackjack.
